　こちらでははじめまして。著者の東浩紀です。

　さて、この『ゲーム的リアリズムの誕生』は、『動物化するポストモダン』の続編ですが、それを読んでいないひとでも読めるように書かれた書物です。とりあえずは、ライトノベルやノベル系のアドベンチャーゲームに関心のあるひとに読んでいただきたいと思っていますが、それらの作品に触れたことがなくても、現代のエンターテインメントに興味がある読者一般に広く読まれる内容になっていると思います。

　本書の主題は、ひとことで言えば、「ポストモダン、すなわち物語の力が衰えた世界において、それでも物語を語ろうとすればどうなるか」というものです。この課題は、現代の多くの作家が直面するはずのものですが、僕はこの本では、いくつかの理由からライトノベルと美少女ゲームを分析対象として選びました。状況や作品については解説が入るので、特別の予備知識は必要ありません。

　議論は２章に分かれており、第１章では、新城カズマの入門書を用いてライトノベルについて最低限の知識を確認したうえで、評論家の大塚英志の議論、とりわけ『キャラクター小説の作り方』を批判的に読みながら、「まんが・アニメ的リアリズム」「ゲーム的リアリズム」の理論が探究されます。第２章では、その結果を受けて、『All You Need Is Kill』『ONE』『Ever17』『ひぐらしのなく頃に』『九十九十九』が分析されます。参照対象の中心はライトノベルと美少女ゲームですが、『九十九十九』が挙がっていることからわかるように、一般小説へも言及しています。第１章では、伝統的な文芸評論への批判も記されています。付録として、清涼院流水論と『AIR』論を収録しています。『ファウスト』連載時の原稿は完全に書きかえられており、書き下ろしと言って差し支えありません。

　僕は1993年に批評家としてデビューしており、振り返るとすでに15年近いキャリアをもっています。この『ゲーム的リアリズムの誕生』には、その長さを受けて、さまざまな文脈が流れ込んでいます。この本は、ある見方で見れば、僕がはじめて記した本格的な作品批評であり、他方では、僕がここ数年、あまり書籍にならないかたちで行ってきたライトノベル・ブームへの関与の総決算でもあります。またそれは、前著と同じく、社会学的な文脈でも読めるでしょう。むろん、近年のオタクブーム、コンテンツブームの流れのなかにもあります。

　けれども、僕個人の文脈を言えば、これは、僕がはじめて、最初から最後までを体系的に構成し、その意図がなんとか実現できた本です。

　僕のむかしからの読者は知っているかもしれませんが、僕は学生のころ、ジャック・デリダという哲学者の研究をしていました。デリダの思想には「脱構築」というキーワードがあり、それは要は、真の思想は体系化できないという教えです。そのせいもあって、僕はいわば、体系的な書籍を書くことができない体質になっていました。本書は、その体質を改善するために記した本でもあります。したがって、本書は、内容に読者のみなさんが同意されるかどうかは横に措いて、とりあえずは僕のいままでの本のなかで、もっとも読みやすく、また論理的な著作になっていると思います。

　「批評」というと、聞き慣れないタームを並べ立て、単なる印象論を難しく理論武装するだけの困った言説というイメージがあるかもしれません。実際に、世の中には、そのように非難されても仕方がない「批評」が数多くあります。批評家のひとりとして、そのような状況を恥じるとともに、なんとかオルタナティブを差し出すことができないか、と考えて記したのがこの本です。

　多くの読者に読んでもらいたいと思います。よろしくお願いします。
